Effective date: 12 October 2026
Lorato House Rescue Centre ("Lorato House", "we", "us") is a child protection and residential care facility in Maun, Botswana, operated by Love Botswana Outreach Mission Trust ("LBOM Trust"). This policy explains what personal information we collect or receive through loratohouse.org, how and why we use it, when it may be shared, how it is protected and the choices and rights you may have in relation to it. Donations made through this website are processed by our United States partner, Jerry & Jana Lackey Ministries, Inc. ("Lackey Ministries"), a registered 501(c)(3) organisation, which issues tax receipts for eligible gifts. For purposes of applicable data protection law, LBOM Trust is the data controller in respect of personal information for which it determines the purposes and means of processing. Where Lackey Ministries, a payment processor or another third party independently determines the purposes and means of processing particular personal information, that organisation may act as an independent data controller or equivalent responsible organisation in respect of that processing and will be responsible for complying with the legal obligations applicable to it. Donor information may be received or processed by Lackey Ministries for purposes including donation administration, receipting, financial record-keeping, tax and regulatory compliance, donor servicing and other purposes reasonably connected with the administration of the gift. This Privacy Policy should be read subject to applicable law. Nothing in this policy is intended to create rights or obligations beyond those imposed by applicable law or to waive any lawful right, defence, privilege, confidentiality obligation or remedy available to Lorato House, LBOM Trust or Lackey Ministries.
Contact and enquiry details: When you contact us through our forms or other communication channels, we may collect or receive information including your name, email address, phone or WhatsApp number, the subject of your enquiry, your message, correspondence with us and any other information you voluntarily provide.
Please do not submit confidential, sensitive or identifying information relating to a child through a general website enquiry form unless you have been specifically requested or authorised to do so. Where a child-protection concern needs to be reported, an appropriate safeguarding or statutory reporting channel should be used where available.
Newsletter details: When you subscribe to receive news or updates, we may collect your email address, communication preferences and information relating to your subscription or consent.
Donation and sponsorship details: When you give through our donation forms, our payment and donation partners, including Donorbox, Stripe and PayPal, may collect information required to process the transaction, which may include your name, email address, billing details, payment information, gift amount, donation frequency, gift designation and transaction details. Lorato House may receive information including your name, email address, gift amount, gift designation, transaction or receipt information and other details reasonably necessary for donation administration, receipting, accounting, financial reporting, donor communication, fraud prevention, regulatory compliance and related purposes. We do not receive or store your full payment-card number. Payment information processed directly by Donorbox, Stripe, PayPal or another payment provider is subject to that provider's own systems, privacy practices, security measures and legal obligations. If you begin a child sponsorship, we may collect information reasonably necessary to establish and administer your recurring gift, maintain appropriate communication with you and manage your sponsorship in accordance with applicable safeguarding requirements. Participation in a sponsorship programme does not give a sponsor any entitlement to confidential records or identifying, medical, family, safeguarding, case-management, location or other protected information concerning a child. We do not disclose children's personal information through this website except where disclosure is lawful, appropriately authorised, consistent with our safeguarding obligations and compatible with the safety, dignity, privacy and best interests of the child. Where appropriate, information may be anonymised, pseudonymised, redacted, aggregated or otherwise limited to reduce the risk of identification or harm.
Technical information: Our hosting provider and other authorised technology providers may record standard technical and server information, such as IP address, browser or device type, pages visited, date and time of access, security information, diagnostic information and website activity. We may use this information to operate, maintain, secure and improve the website, diagnose technical problems, prevent fraud or misuse and investigate security incidents. The precise information collected may vary according to the manner in which you interact with our website, the services you use and the technical systems used by our service providers.
We process personal information only where there is a lawful basis for doing so under applicable law. Depending on the circumstances, we may process personal information on the basis of consent, contractual necessity, compliance with a legal obligation, protection of vital interests, legitimate interests or another lawful basis recognised by applicable law. We may use personal information: to answer your enquiries and communicate with you about Lorato House; to provide information or services you request; to process, administer and record gifts and donations; to issue or facilitate receipts, including eligible United States tax receipts through Lackey Ministries; to keep accurate financial, accounting, tax, audit and donation records; to manage child sponsorship, including appropriate private matching and sponsor communications in accordance with our safeguarding requirements; to manage donor and supporter relationships; to send newsletters and updates where you have requested or otherwise lawfully consented to receive them; to maintain records of your communication preferences; to meet legal, accounting, tax, safeguarding and regulatory obligations in Botswana, the United States and any other jurisdiction whose laws lawfully apply to the relevant processing; to prevent, detect and investigate suspected fraud, misuse, unlawful conduct and security incidents; to protect our website, systems, facilities and services; to protect the safety, dignity, welfare, privacy and best interests of children in our care; to protect another person from harm; to respond to lawful requests from courts, regulators, child-protection bodies, law-enforcement agencies or other competent authorities; to obtain professional or legal advice; to establish, exercise or defend legal rights and claims; and for other purposes reasonably compatible with the purpose for which the information was collected or otherwise authorised by applicable law. Where processing is based upon consent, consent may be withdrawn in accordance with applicable law. Withdrawal of consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing undertaken before the withdrawal and does not require us to stop processing information where another lawful basis permits or requires continued processing.
We may share personal information with service providers, professional advisers, partner organisations and other persons where reasonably necessary to operate the website, administer donations and sponsorships, communicate with supporters, protect children or other persons, comply with legal obligations or otherwise carry out the purposes described in this policy. These service providers and partners may include: Webflow for website hosting and forms; Donorbox, Stripe and PayPal for donation and payment processing; Lackey Ministries for the administration and receipting of eligible United States gifts and related donor, financial, tax and regulatory purposes; Active Campaign and Mailchimp for authorised email communications; Google Workspace for email, documents and organisational services; and Zapier for authorised movement and automation of form, donation and other data between designated systems. We seek to limit disclosures to information reasonably necessary for the relevant purpose and, where required by applicable law and appropriate to the relationship, to use service providers subject to contractual, confidentiality, privacy and security obligations. Some third-party providers, including certain payment processors and partner organisations, may process personal information as independent data controllers or equivalent responsible organisations rather than solely on our instructions. In such circumstances, their processing is also governed by their own privacy notices, contractual terms and applicable legal obligations. The use of a third-party service provider does not mean that Lorato House, LBOM Trust or Lackey Ministries controls every aspect of that provider's systems, operations or independent processing. Nothing in this policy excludes or limits any responsibility which applicable law does not permit to be excluded or limited. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share personal information with advertisers for their independent advertising purposes. We may disclose personal information where reasonably necessary or required or permitted by applicable law, including: pursuant to a lawful court order, subpoena, statutory requirement or regulatory request; to a competent government, regulatory, child-protection or law-enforcement authority; to protect the safety, welfare, rights or best interests of a child; to prevent or respond to a risk of harm to another person; to prevent, detect or investigate suspected fraud, abuse, security incidents or unlawful conduct; to obtain legal or professional advice; to establish, exercise or defend legal rights or claims; or to protect the lawful rights, property, operations or security of Lorato House, LBOM Trust, Lackey Ministries, our users or another person.
This website uses cookies and similar technologies that may be set by our hosting provider, embedded donation forms, payment processors or other authorised service providers so that the website, security features and payment facilities operate correctly. These may include cookies necessary for website functionality, session management, payment processing, fraud prevention and security. We do not currently use advertising or behavioural-tracking cookies for targeted advertising. If analytics, advertising or other non-essential tracking technologies are introduced in future, we will update this policy and will obtain consent or provide any additional notice where required by applicable law. You may control or block certain cookies through your browser settings. However, disabling cookies may affect the operation or functionality of parts of the website or embedded payment services. Third-party services integrated with this website may also place cookies or use similar technologies in accordance with their own privacy and cookie practices.
This website is intended for adults and is not designed or directed at children for the purpose of collecting personal information directly from them. We do not knowingly solicit personal information directly from anyone under the age of 18 through our general website forms. Information concerning children in our care is treated as highly sensitive and is subject to enhanced confidentiality, safeguarding and access controls. It is handled in accordance with applicable law, including the Children's Act of Botswana, the Data Protection Act, 2024, our Safeguarding Policy and other applicable internal policies and procedures. Sponsors, donors and supporters do not acquire any right or entitlement to a child's confidential records or to identifying, medical, psychological, educational, family, location, safeguarding, legal or case-management information by reason of making a donation or participating in a sponsorship programme. Lorato House and LBOM Trust may withhold, restrict, redact, discontinue or change information made available to a sponsor, donor or supporter where we reasonably consider this necessary to protect a child, another person, confidentiality, safeguarding obligations or our legal and regulatory responsibilities. Nothing in this policy prevents Lorato House or LBOM Trust from collecting, preserving, using or disclosing information concerning a child where this is required or permitted by law or reasonably necessary for safeguarding, child protection, healthcare, legal proceedings, regulatory compliance, law enforcement or the protection of a child or another person from harm.
Our providers and partner organisations may process information in Botswana, the United States, the European Union and other jurisdictions in which they or their authorised service providers operate. Accordingly, personal information may in some circumstances be transferred to, accessed from, stored in or otherwise processed outside Botswana. Any international transfer or processing of personal information is subject to the data-protection laws applicable to the organisation responsible for that processing. The privacy and data-protection laws of a country outside Botswana may differ from those applicable in Botswana. Independent payment processors and other providers remain responsible for obligations imposed upon them in relation to processing for which they act independently. We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes for which it was collected or subsequently lawfully processed, subject to applicable legal, regulatory, safeguarding, accounting, audit, tax and operational requirements. In particular: enquiry details may be retained for as long as reasonably necessary to respond, follow up and maintain appropriate records of the matter; donation and financial records may be retained for the period required by applicable accounting, audit, tax, charitable, regulatory and record-keeping requirements; sponsorship records may be retained for as long as reasonably necessary to administer the sponsorship relationship and satisfy safeguarding, financial and legal obligations; and newsletter details may generally be retained until you unsubscribe or withdraw the relevant consent, subject to our ability to retain information reasonably necessary to record and respect your communication preference. We may retain information for a longer period where reasonably necessary or permitted by law, including for safeguarding purposes, regulatory compliance, audits, complaint handling, dispute resolution, fraud prevention, investigations or to establish, exercise or defend legal rights or claims. Where information is no longer reasonably required, it may be deleted, anonymised or otherwise securely disposed of in accordance with applicable law and applicable records-management procedures.
We use reasonable and appropriate administrative, technical and physical measures designed to protect personal information, having regard to the nature and sensitivity of the information, the circumstances in which it is processed and the risks associated with the processing. Such measures may include access controls, and encrypted connections on this website. Our service providers and other third parties maintain their own security systems and controls, and their independent systems are not under the exclusive control of Lorato House, LBOM Trust or Lackey Ministries. No method of transmission over the internet, electronic communication, website, payment system or method of electronic or physical storage is completely secure. While reasonable and appropriate measures are taken to protect personal information, absolute security cannot be guaranteed, and we cannot warrant that unauthorised access, cyberattack, disclosure, alteration, loss, destruction, interception or misuse will never occur.
You can unsubscribe from our emails at any time using the unsubscribe link in an applicable message or by contacting us. Depending upon the law applicable to the processing of your personal information, and subject to any statutory exceptions, qualifications or limitations, you may have rights relating to your personal information. Under the Botswana Data Protection Act, 2024 and other applicable data-protection laws where relevant, these rights may include the right to: request access to personal information held about you; request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information; request deletion or erasure where the applicable legal requirements are satisfied; withdraw consent where processing is based upon consent. These rights are not absolute and may be subject to lawful exceptions or restrictions. For example, a request for deletion does not require Lorato House, LBOM Trust or Lackey Ministries to delete information that it is legally required or otherwise lawfully entitled to retain, including information required for safeguarding, financial, tax, regulatory, evidential, dispute-resolution or legal-claims purposes. Before responding to a request, we may ask for information reasonably necessary to verify the identity and, where applicable, authority of the person making the request. This is intended to prevent unauthorised access to or disclosure of personal information. Where a request concerns information about another person, and particularly a child, we may require satisfactory evidence that the requester has lawful authority to make the request and may restrict or refuse disclosure where necessary or permitted by law to protect the child's safety, privacy, confidentiality, dignity or best interests or the rights of another person. A request relating to processing independently undertaken by Lackey Ministries, a payment processor or another independent controller may need to be dealt with by that organisation in accordance with the laws applicable to it. To make a request relating to Lorato House or LBOM Trust, please contact us using the details below.
We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in our activities, website, services, technology, service providers, payment arrangements, safeguarding practices or legal and regulatory obligations. The effective date at the top of this policy shows when the current version took effect. Any changes will take effect from the effective date stated in the updated policy, subject to applicable law. Previous versions may be retained for governance, evidential, audit, compliance and record-keeping purposes.
